When one looks at todays’ endless wars and refugee crisis on TV or social media, it’s as if we see live pictures of what once happened to my ancestors before 106 years.
In this artwork, the past and future memory elements are tightened in circular embroidery frames of different diameters.
In some frames, we notice maps that are glued or stitched on the canvas; on other ones, we see paper boats, red lines, boat images stitched and sunset by the sea;
A flower embroidered by an unknown grandmother or a single old aunt that has sacrificed her life for her brother’s children — the flower is untying – the memory is disintegrating. We can also see fences in collage, signs of prohibition for new arriving boats, grid in flower shape.

Then comes the network and the knots. It’s black, it’s white and sometimes pink. It is the [almost impossible] task to re-assemble all memories together… my memories, your memories. The networks and knots are fragile they could be broken anytime.
Finding links between my past and your present past– yes! The present past—because what you are going through right now is going to become past soon…
We thought it will happen only to us, and never to you…
You thought that sanction only happens to the other not to you…
But it did happen. The forfeit was inflicted to me 100 years ago, and now to you 100 years later.
Does your present suffering resemble to my past hidden wounds? Do we have a common collective memory now? I am aware of what is happening to you now; are you aware of what is happening to you now?

wooden rectangular frame, circular frames, stickers, maps, cotton and wool threads, nails and staples, decoupages and collages, stitching and cross stitching, handmade embroidery by me, ready made embroidery and wool work made by unknown
