This painting is a part of a series that i have been working on for 4 years. The series depicts stages of abuse, mental, physical and many more forms. In each painting as a viewer you can decipher the messages hidden in the art, each individual might find a piece to relate to, knowing that every human being has been touched by abuse in one form or the other. Behind the veil lies the truth set in words left unspoken. Behind the veil is Layla, with words and thoughts, with strength and determination, with wisdom and culture she fights for her right in a society that considers her inferior. Mental abuse is a universal language that we as humans relate to, regardless of religion and social status.

The process of this painting was a rollercoaster. It started with me reading an article about the young yazidi brides. In my emotional outrage i pasted the newspaper on the canvas after shredding it and crumbling it in an attempt to create a collage. Soon enough the image of layla with her veil came to my mind and i painted the image on top of the newspaper. The texture of the painting is bumpy and thick. This painting represents the stigma behind the veil, humanizing the person through breaking the barrier of cultural misappropriation. Giving her a voice through actions, and strength through education. represented by the words within the veil, and the society represented by her surroundings.
